36 – How This Independent Pharmacy Owner Became a Healthcare Hub in Her Local Community

Ahunna Freeman Black Women Pharmacists

On today’s episode, I’m chatting it up with Dr. Ahunna Freeman, owner of Southside Discount Pharmacy in Winston Salem, North Carolina. As an independent community owner, Dr. Freeman believes that the community pharmacy should not only serve as a medication dispensary, but as a healthcare “hub” for residents in the community.

Dr. Freeman completed her undergraduate studies in Chemistry at The University of North Carolina Asheville and earned her Doctor of Pharmacy at Campbell University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in 2009.

She created Southside Discount Pharmacy as part of her vision to establish a pharmacy where pharmacists could help patients learn about their medications, and manage their disease state(s) while teaching them the importance of preventive care.

Dr. Freeman serves as a preceptor for schools of pharmacy within the state of North Carolina. In 2019, she was awarded the High Point University Fred Wilson School of Pharmacy IPPE Preceptor of the Year award.
