38 – How This Pharmacy Resident Prepared Herself for a Pediatric Pharmacy Residency

Kathy Monangai Black Women Pharmacists

Today I have the pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Kathy E. Monangai, a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy. Kathy was raised in Roseland, New Jersey by Cameroonian immigrants and as a first-generation Cameroonian-American, her parents instilled the importance of their roots, the need to help the less fortunate, and the power of education.

Although Dr. Monangai has several pharmacists in her family, at first she did not want to pursue the field of pharmacy until she had the opportunity to shadow her aunt at work as an oncology health-system pharmacist. That’s when her love for pharmacy began.

During pharmacy school, she was an active member of the Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA), eventually serving as the National Vice President of SNPhA in her last year. She’s now serving as a National Executive Consultant. Additionally, she was also an active member in the American Clinical College of Pharmacy (ACCP).

Currently, Dr. Monongai is a PGY-1 Community-Based Pharmacy Resident at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. The residency program includes all of her interests in addition to other specialties such as management, population health, internal medicine, and specialty pharmacy. Her future training will prepare her for pediatric primary care, academia, and implementing public health initiatives.
