41 – Pharmacy Leaders Share Advice To Prospective Pharmacy Residents

Reaching Residency Black Women Pharmacists Podcast

So last October, we did a thing! I linked up with a team of Pharmacy leaders and we partnered up to provide “Reaching Residency,” a program aimed to increase representation of Black Pharmacy residents throughout the U.S.

On today’s episode, I asked our pharmacy leaders to share their advice for our prospective pharmacy residents and they did not disappoint!

No matter where you are in your residency journey, the messages are applicable right now! You’ll hear encouraging words of wisdom and actionable advice from both new and seasoned pharmacy leaders, so take notes!

As we do the work to increase representation for our Black Pharmacy leaders, we want to make sure that once we get there, we are 100% supported!

And how do we garner support? We ask for it!

Allies 4 Black Women Pharmacists

Allies 4 Black Women Pharmacists is a campaign we’re launching February 1st to garner support of Pharmacists from ALL different backgrounds to show up and publicly declare their allyship for Black Women Pharmacists!

Why? Because allyship matters and this is how we make sure our voices are not only heard, but they are echoing on the loudspeakers, not just by us, but by everyone around us.

I’ve been in environments where I didn’t feel comfortable enough to share my thoughts or comfortable enough to simply engage in office small talk. On the other hand, I’ve been in rooms where my co-workers asked for my input and offered credit even when I was hesitant to speak up. Those were the rooms where I felt included. Those were the tables that I truly felt that what I had to say really mattered.

Those are the very tables we’re working so hard to ensure that we are there and continue to show up to be present and to represent!

Did you know?

A recent study from the Lean In Foundation, found that for every 100 men, only 58 Black women are promoted to a managerial position, even though Black women ask for promotions at the same rate. Only 7% of organizations set representation goals specific for both gender and race, suggesting a need for companies to set intentional goals around the advancement of Black women. (You can read more about this on the blog post I wrote for GOODRx).

It’s time for a change and we’re about to make it happen (Goooo Kamala)! I’ve designed various sweatshirts and t-shirts specific for our Black women pharmacists and allies! Ten percent of proceeds will go towards two different pharmacy organizations that specifically support Black Women Pharmacists and women of color!

I’m so excited for this campaign! More details to follow, but get ready to spread the word.
